Average serve speeds in both men’s and women’s tennis have increased significantly over the years so, in this article, I thought it would be fun to have a would look at how fast some of the top pro players on the ATP and WTA Tours hit their serve.
For this article, I have looked at the average tennis serve speed of the top 20 players on the ATP and WTA Tours as well as a select number of popular players that are currently outside the top 20 or have recently retired such as Roger Federer and Serena Williams.
Tennis Serve Speed Averages
The serve speed information below was sourced from data released by the tournament organizers of the 2022 Australian Open.
If a player did not play in the 2022 Australian Open then I have used data from the last grand slam tournament they participated in.
These players have been marked with a “*” next to their names.
Average Serve Speeds in Men’s Tennis
The average 1st serve speed for the top men’s players listed below was 188km/h (117mph) while the average second serve speed was 154km/h (96mph).
The average speed for second serves above may seem low but there are far fewer players like Pete Sampras who often hit second serves nearly as fast as his first serves.
Reilly Opelka had the fastest average 1st serve at 203km/h (126mph) while John Isner had the fastest average 2nd serve at 182km/h (113mph).
