The tournament has a long history on the WTA Tour with the first Pan Pacific Open being played in 1976.
The tournament was held in Osaka in 2019 but will make a return to Tokyo in 2022 after no tournament was played in 2020 or 2021.

The 2022 tournament in Tokyo will be held from the 19th to the 25th of September 2022.
The 2022 tournament will be played in the same week as the WTA tournaments in Budapest and Seoul as well as the ATP Tournaments in Nur-Sultan, Metz, and London.
